We Love the Holidays
Yeah, okay. Everyone loves the holidays. But our founder’s passion for the season is contagious. From his annual 12 Days of Smithmas to lavish dinners and parties, Charles’ excitement for all things holiday really started when he was traveling overseas.
“I love the Danish Christmas,” Charles’s voice lit up as he explained. “You have this thing called the Julefrokost, where you gather with friends and eat and drink. You can get invited to anywhere from one to twenty of them starting December 1 through Christmas. It’s a great time to eat and drink and celebrate friends, the tradition of candles on the tree and the family joining in song… There’s nothing more beautiful than going down the walking street of Copenhagen when it’s all strung with garland and big luminous red hearts, which are a primary symbol of Christmas.”
That Danish tradition of friends and family coming together in celebration all month long intersects with Charles’ love of entertaining and fostering community. But when he started a family of his own it really supercharged his holiday cheer.
“I think the most magical thing about Christmas is seeing it through the eyes of children,” he said. “With Charlotte, I began to love Christmas even more than I already did, which was a tremendous amount. Even though I’ve never been the Grinch, my heart grew three times the size when I had her.”
Amongst all the complications, concerns, and chaos of 2020, Charles has maintained his yuletide cheer. One thing he’ll definitely have to do without, however, is any chance of a snowy Christmas.
“This year. with all that’s going on, we decided we’d relocate to Hawaii,” he told me by phone. His plan wasn’t without some internal hesitations, but they worked it out. “Charlotte asked if we could wait until after Christmas, so Santa could find her, but I reassured her he’d always find her anywhere in the world.”
I did one more question before letting him get some well-deserved rest and relaxation on those sandy Aloha beaches. Which of his wines does he recommend for a perfect holiday pairing?
“Heart,” he exclaimed without missing a beat. “It has a big beautiful heart on it, a symbol of love and compassion.”
I couldn’t agree more. Happy holidays, everyone!
